Depending on where you are, Canon’s new flagship might carry different letters but the the bottom line is the same: this photo is GOOD news for aspiring indie filmmakers.
According to DPreview:
The EOS 550D redefines the boundaries of Canon’s consumer DSLR range, incorporating technologies and features more commonly found in semi-professional DSLRs into the compact, lightweight body favoured by consumers. With a newly-developed 18 Megapixel (MP) APS-C CMOS sensor, coupled with Canon’s advanced DIGIC 4 image processor and the ability to shoot Full HD movies, photography enthusiasts are empowered to explore new levels of creativity.
Yes, full HD and an ISO range of 100 – 6400 (expandable to 12800) means you’ll get a lot mileage from scenes with natural (often poor) lighting.
The camera itself is too new, so the previews have been based on pre-production units but I’m pretty excited!

I can’t wait to see some reviews on this thing. I was planning on getting a 7D, but if this works just as well for video, I’m in.
Sounds awesome! Any news on the pricing?

@James
The price is $799 body only and $899 withe the kit lens.
The quality of the video on a production model camera is very promising. You can see the clip from Marlon Torres entirely shoot by T2i here: http://www.eos550d.com/2010/02/the-bridge-a-positive-confirmation/
Reading a few reports about overheating issues if it is being used continuously for shooting a lot of video, as may mean waiting for cooling down between sessions. Also 12 minute max continuous shooting time is a nuisance and no software yet to bind chunks of video together, but may not bother some users.
Hey Michael, you wrote “I was planning on getting a 7D, but if this works just as well for video, I’m in.” There is an interview at http://thenewfilmmaker.com/ – Its an Interview with the D.o.P. Pedro Negrão. They made a really nice movie with the 7D. The video quality looks really great.
The output from the t2i is really impressive. I’ve seen a lot of filmmakers using it lately and the results are really impressive considering the price of the camera

I am an aspiring filmmaker, would like to shot a short film. I am looking out for camera for shooting short films. my friend recommended me canon550d. Its DSLR camera. Is it worth taking. Will it be good video capturing and short films? What about canonHV20 and HV30 ? which one you would prefer ?
Requesting you to solve my dilemma
I’ve been considering buying the canon eos 550d for making short films BUT i’m worried on what i’ve heard about it heating up and not being able to film much, as i will be far from home when filming.. I’m not sure if this is for me
