Man vs Wild

I must admit I’m a bit obsessive at times. This time it’s Bear Grylls’ Man vs Wild show that’s aired on the Discovery channel.

Check out this bit from a survival episode in the Alps. He jumps into a frozen lake to demonstrate how to survive if you ever get into one.

Now, talking about indie moviemaking (and documentary-making), this is one talent you’ll need to develop – getting a cold shower every so often. Think about what it takes HIM to do a half-hour show.

Speaking of awsome survival shows, i’ve been watching a lot of Les Stroud (Canadian) doing ‘Survivorman’ which is a similar type of show, except he goes out alone, with no camera crew at all and 3+ cameras for a week in whatever inhospitable terrain he can find. Its incredible to watch and has inspired me to think about filming my own backpacking experiences.

Next I need to pick out a small handycam sized camera that would work well enough to film HD quality video and wouldn’t cost an arm and a leg to buy for my first time out. I have considered simply using a good digital camera that has HD video capture but I dont know what kind of results I might get from that.

One thing he does is film himself talking/walking by somehow holding the camera at length aimed back at himself. Any idea what kind of mount one would use for that? I assume he’s not just holding the tripod by the bottom.. you would think that would be terribly unstable.. maybe not?
